Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard a good thing. A Time Capsule would round off the whole thing. One would not all the time a whirring USB hard disk on his desk and could, if you have a Macbook, Macbook Pro or Macbook Air to call its own, even from the garden, living room or any other area in which the own WLAN is available, Backups or drag produced files.
Unfortunately, the Time Capsule does not come cheap and some will even have a large USB hard drive. For this reason, here are 6 easy steps to her from a USB hard drive and a SMB share can build a Time Capsule.
In my case serves as a server Fritzbox 7170 with the latest Firmware . This offers the possibility of USB hard drives with FAT32 partition as a SMB share to provide. The hard drive can of course be any router or computer provided. Before we begin
it should be mentioned that Time Machine over the wireless network is not as fast as Time Capsule can make it. The initial backup takes quite a long time. Then it is for my needs but in a quite tolerable.
Here we go
Step 1:
We create a FAT32 partition on the USB drive. Here, the disk utility can be deployed quickly and easily. Please remember that all data is lost on the disk before you format.
Step 2:
After the hard drive is now partitioned, we close it at the Fritzbox and share them via SMB.
If all goes well we should now see the web interface that the hard drive is connected.
Step 3:
This Time Machine allows us to secure the network drives we now enter the following command in the terminal.
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes a
step 4:
We in step 1, a Fat 32 partition in sets. This must be to recognize the Fritzbox our drive. Unfortunately, Time Capsule, but not write to FAT32 partitions, but wants the HFS + J format. For this reason, we are now following command in the terminal.
hdiutil create-size IMAGE SIZE-fs HFS + J-type SPARSEBUNDLE HOSTNAME_MACADDR.sparsebundle
This command sets us an HFS + J image that grows dynamically up to the appointed IMAGE SIZE .
Tip:
I use for my 160 Gb HDD in Macbook A 160GB hard drive for backup without any problems. If in this example to back up 500Gb has available, the image is recommended to only 200 or 250Gb IMAGE SIZE set. So you can use the rest of the hard disk or other files that are available over the network and can be read by all operating systems.
HOSTNAME we replace by the name of our Macs. This we see System Preferences -> Sharing. Here, please do not use "sebastian-Brooches-macbook.local" but "sebastian_broschs_macbook"
We then replace nor MACADDR by We
ifconfig en0
in the terminal run and copy the numbers behind ether. This will see in something like this. 00:1 b: 64: ac: 9b: f0.
Important the colon must be removed (001b64ac9bf0). provides
So then the final command:.
hdiutil create-size 200G-fs HFS + J-type SPARSEBUNDLE sebastian_broschs_macbook_ 001b64ac9bf0 sparsebundle
Step 5:
We are almost done. Apple opens + k us "Connect to Server" window now.
where we carry smb: / / a fritz.box. Then say the Mac, we would like to register as a guest.
Now the window shows us the drive that is connected to the Fritzbox. This is what we choose and have it mounted it. Now we put our newly generated HFS + J image on that disk.
Step 6:
In the settings of Time Machine, we just select the mounted drive as a backup volume. After 120sekunden the backup will start automatically.
Tip:
For the initial backup should be the Mac is connected via cable to the Fritzbox so that the copy is completed faster.
Sun that's it. Congratulations on your self-built Time Capsule. Once Time Machine now wants to create a backup or started, it connects, if possible automatically to the hard disk and does its work.
